| This dug out bottom was made by the Finnish Sommelo organisation in 1997-1999. The building stopped and the bottom disrepaired. The Rus Project took care of it in 2001 and will make a boat of it. It is planned to become a replica of a find from the village Mekrijärvi in eastern Finland. The find is dated by the C14-method to the 15th century and represents a special type of dug-out boat with additional planks. The planks are sewn to the dug out with root fibers. See an excellent overview of boat sewing techniques (A web site made by Misha Naimark). | ![]() |

By heating the outside of the hollowed trunk with fire the outside surface wood shrinks. At the same time the inside of the trunk is kept wet. This results in a widening of the boat shell. The widening is assisted by putting crossbars of green sticks inside. On the pictures we are expanding the Mekrijärvi replica on the 20th of April 2002 on the island of Replot. |
