The more we interpret the construction and performance of the Lapuri ship type, the more we are amazed by the genius of the ancient boatbuilder. He was familiar with hydrodynamics and was able to use his knowledge to meet the demands of his time.
Fredrik Koivusalo started, together with marine archaeologist Harry Alopeus, this replica construction in summer 1995 at Foteviken Museum in Scania, Sweden. In accordance with the original Lapuri ship we used oak as building material. Harry Alopeus, who has investigated and reconstructed the Lapuri find, has given a detailed design to this replica. The keel and the stems were laid after a month. Then Foteviken Museum took care of the building with a view to finish it in two years. After two years the planking was ready. As agreed upon, the half-finished ship, at this point, reverted into Fredrik Koivusalo´s hands and was transported to Replot, Finland, where it is worked on at an amble.
